James M. Scott
Herman Brown Chair and Professor of Political Science, Texas Christian University

James M. Scott joined TCU as Herman Brown Chair and Professor of Political Science in August 2011. His primary research and teaching interests are in international relations and foreign policy analysis and he has special interests in U.S. foreign policy-making, the role of Congress, and U.S. democracy promotion. He has authored/co-authored seven books: IR: The Search for Security (Cengage-Wadsworth, forthcoming, January 2012, with Ralph G. Carter and A. Cooper Drury), Deciding to Intervene: The Reagan Doctrine and American Foreign Policy (Duke University Press, 1996), After the End: Making American Foreign Policy in the Post-Cold War World (Duke University Press, 1998, editor and chapter contributor), The Politics of United States Foreign Policy (5th edition, Thomson, Wadsworth, 2011, with Jerel A. Rosati), Choosing to Lead: Understanding Congressional Foreign Policy Entrepreneurs (Duke University Press, 2009, with Ralph G. Carter) and US Foreign Policy Today: American Renewal? (co-editor with Steven Hook; chapter contributor). His numerous articles have appeared in such journals as Congress and the Presidency, Democratization, Foreign Policy Analysis, Global Society, International Studies Perspectives, International Studies Quarterly, Political Science Quarterly, Politics and Policy, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Social Science Journal, and others. In addition, he has authored over 70 book chapters, other non-refereed publications, review essays and conference papers.

To date he has been awarded nearly $1,000,000 in external funding from various agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the Dirksen Congressional Center, and another $18,500 in internal awards from the universities at which he has served. During his career, he has been an award-winning teacher, earning over two dozen teaching awards from students, faculty, administration and professional associations from 1996-2007, including his university's highest awards for research (2000, 2001), teaching (2002) and research mentoring (2002).

Professor Scott has been active in professional associations, serving on the governing boards, as conference program chair, and as president of both the International Studies Association - Midwest (2000) and the Foreign Policy Analysis Section (2001) of the International Studies Association. He began a five-year term as co-editor of the International Studies Association journal Foreign Policy Analysis in Fall 2009. Since 2004, he has directed the annual NSF-funded Democracy and World Politics Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.

Professor Scott was born in Illinois and has his B.A. from Wheaton College (1986) and his M.A. (1988) and Ph.D. (1993) from Northern Illinois University. More about James M. Scott.
