Project Finish Line

A college degree is a key component in social mobility. NIU prides itself on our long tradition of providing access and opportunity to underserved populations who come to college, not only to achieve their personal and career goals, but also to make a difference in their families, communities, states and nations.

The dream does not come easily. Many students work multiple jobs to cover school expenses and struggle to cover everyday expenses such as housing, food, childcare and transportation.

  • 200+ students drop out each year during their final four semesters, due to outstanding balances and increasing debt.
  • The average amount needed to keep these students on track to graduate was less than $1,500.
  • More than 50% of current NIU CLAS students who have completed 75% or more of their academic requirements cannot enroll in their upcoming semester because of financial roadblocks.
  • More than 66% of Liberal Arts and Sciences students from underserved populations leave NIU by their junior year.

A Solid Return on Your Investment

Since its inception in 2017, Project Finish Line has supported more than 200 students, achieving a 95% graduation rate.

You’ll be paving the way for future scientists, educators, journalists, lawyers, researchers, doctors, public servants and activists. The hallmark NIU grit and dreams are there — they just need a little investment to come true.
