Undergraduate

Earn your Bachelor of Science in physics by choosing an emphasis in professional physics, applied physics or physics education. Students pursuing educator licensure complete the Educator Licensure, Secondary Science program.

As a smaller Ph.D.-granting department, we offer opportunities to work closely with faculty in the classroom and through undergraduate research. Upper-level courses average fewer than 15 students, giving you personalized attention and hands-on learning experiences.

Our faculty are active researchers at Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, both located within an hour of NIU. As an undergraduate, you'll have opportunities to participate in world-class research alongside faculty mentors.

Well-qualified juniors, seniors and first-year graduate students planning to attend graduate school are encouraged to apply for prestigious fellowships, including the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the Graduate Fellowships for STEM Development (GFSD).
