Honors and Awards


NIU (CLAS Educator Licensure and Mathematical Sciences) is ranked 7th in the nation for producing math teachers.

Ten of NIU’s past 12 Lincoln Laureates have come from College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ranks among the top universities for the number of American Chemical Society-certified bachelor’s degrees awarded annually.

NIU is one of only three institutions, and the only public institution in Illinois, that grants teacher licensure in all six social science areas. 

NIU is one of only two state schools to license in Environmental Studies -- only five schools in Illinois have this program.

Biological Sciences is one of the few programs in the Midwest to have a cadaver lab not attached to a medical school. The lab provides valuable experience for Biomedical Engineering, Biology/Pre-Med, Pre-Physical Therapy and Kinesiology undergraduates. Graduate students can earn a master’s degree in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Human Anatomical Sciences.

The Illinois Association of Museums (IAM) awarded the James B. and Rosalyn L. Pick Museum of Anthropology a Superior Award – the highest award, only awarded to one institution annually – for its exhibit “Storytelling: Hmong American Voices.” The Pick also received and Excellent Award for their 50th Anniversary Collection catalog. The museum is home to more than 12,000 artifacts with large collections from Southeast Asia, New Guinea and North America. 

NIU Forensics placed second in the nation in their division at the National Forensics Association National Tournament. Eleven NIU Forensics students participated in the 2016 Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament.  Senior Julia Boyle placed 3rd in the nation in Persuasive Speaking, was a semi-finalist in After Dinner Speaking and Program of Oral Interpretation.

NIU’s Mock Trial Team, started in 2012, was named as one of six “Outstanding Trial Teams” and finished with the third best overall record at the 2016 American Mock Trial Association’s Opening Round Championship Series, earning them a bid to the national championship for the first time in NIU school history. 

Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are the best of the best. In the past five years, our faculty have received:

  • 10 of 12 Board of Trustees Professorships
  • 12 of 12 Presidential Research Professorships
  • 9 of 14 Presidential Teaching Professorships
  • 7 of 10 Presidential Engagement Professorships

For the third year in a row, a faculty member from Philosophy has been selected as a recipient of the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award.
